Transformation of Political Systems
The design and transformation of political systems is a complex and multifaceted process that involves the reorganization of power structures, institutional arrangements, and societal norms. This process can be triggered by various factors, including crises, violent conflicts, economic transformations, social movements, or regime change and can lead to the emergence of new political systems. Our research focuses on the design and transformation of institutions in African countries, including their stability, resilience, or breakdown. Against this background, we analyse for instance, the establishment of new regimes and the transition from authoritarianism to democracy and vice versa, as well as reforms like decentralization, and electoral systems. The developments of recent coups and the struggle to re-design new political institutions in the Sahel francophone central and west Africa illustrate the challenges confronting political institutions. We also analyse the impact of digital technologies on political systems, including the threats posed by AI and social media misinformation to democracy and the rise of autocratization and regime changes.
